Every screen-time blocker fights the same war: the unlock path. Passcodes you set yourself, “ignore for today” buttons, three-second exceptions — users know every escape hatch because they built them. The interesting new apps in this market are the ones that move the escape hatch somewhere the willpower-depleted brain can’t cheaply reach.
Sentence moves it out of the phone entirely. To unlock a blocked app you must handwrite a sentence on physical paper and scan it with the camera — every time, with no bypass path. That is a genuinely novel enforcement mechanism in our pool: it converts digital impulse into analog friction, and the cost is paid in a medium (pen and paper) the phone cannot optimize away.
Why we are logging it now, at 8 ratings: the unlock-gate market is young, crowded, and — on our data — being won by gate originality rather than marketing budgets. A mechanism this legible (“write a sentence by hand to doomscroll”) is also highly explainable in short video, which is how this category’s earlier breakouts spread.
What would make this a MISS: the mechanism may be too punishing for retention — analog friction that works in week one can drive uninstalls in week three, and a solo developer has limited room to soften the curve. We are logging the observation, not promising the outcome; the criteria box on this page is the whole judgment.
